HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 37TH MCQUAID INVITATIONAL

Weather:  Perfect, after 3 days of rain.  Temp. 60-65.  Course a bit soggy but

increasingly firm under a steady sun.

Course:  A new 3. 0 mile looping which in most cases ran 10-15 seconds slower

than the looping we've used in recent years.  ( Notable exceptions were

Peter Meindl's breaking the old course record by 5 seconds and Molly

Huddle's doing the same by 7 seconds!)

Field:  236 schools from 5 states and Ontario.  Approximately 5300 runners

            spread over 23 races

GIRLS RACES:

Class A Seeded (Small schools)  Skaneateles 42, Groton 69.  Veronica Gobeyn (10) of Williamson NY a runaway winner in 18:01.

Class AA Seeded (Medium Schools) -  Honeoye Falls-Lima  beats Warwick

Valley, 63-67, with a late charge.  Fourth year in a row for HF-L.  Angela Kudla (12) of Starpoint wins in 18:26

Class AAA Seeded (Large Schools) -  Colonie and Shaker bring their rivalry

from Albany to Rochester and finish 1-2 (77-105)  Individually, Molly Huddle, from

Class A Elmira Notre Dame, moves up for a tougher race  and sets a course record of 17:04.4 in beating Footlocker finalists Laurel Burdick of F-M (17:29) and

Michelle Sikes of Lakewood OH (17:48).

BOYS RACES:

Class A Seeded (Small)  -  East Rochester wins for the first time, 114-127, over

Eisenhower PA.  Anthony Mion, St.Vincent's/St.Mary's, Akron OH  (15:10) defeats top PA runner Andy Weilacher  (15:15) of Eisenhower.

Class AA Seeded (Medium) -  Jon Pierce of Canton wins by 55 seconds to lead

Canton to the team title, 77-89, over HF-Lima.   Pierce's 15:06 was best of the day until  Meindl.

Class AAA Seeded (Large) -  Meindl narrowly missed the course record in

winning last year, but his 14:47.4  set a new mark for a course that supposedly

was tougher.  He got plenty of early push from one of Ontario's best  -- Adam

Hortian (14:58) of Bluevale C.I., the only other runner to break 15 minutes.  Tight

team battle between defending champion Greece Athena and Liverpool went

to Athena, 102-111, led by Andy Wigton's 3rd place.
